What is worth stopping for in Carvoeiro

Not an itinerary. These are the things people come back and mention, in no particular order — see two of them or all four.

  1. 1Carvoeiro beach
  2. 2Fort of Our Lady of the Incarnation
  3. 3Algar Seco
  4. 4Paradise beach
Worth knowing

Before you ride to Carvoeiro

  • Algar Seco is ten minutes east of the beach along the clifftop boardwalk: eroded sandstone with two holes worn through it that everyone calls A Boneca, the doll.
  • That boardwalk is the only flat thing in Carvoeiro. The village itself is built down a ravine, which is why everything is steps.
  • It was a fishing village until the 1960s. The beach is small because the cove was never anything bigger — the boats used to be pulled up onto it.

The bike

One bike, and it does this ride

110 m of climbing over 12 km is nothing the motor cannot absorb. It is a hybrid with a motor on it — if the assist runs out you ride on, on seven gears.
